About the race
The Rio Frio 5k on Ice is a chip-timed running event held in Alamosa, Colorado. The main racecourse is set on the frozen Rio Grande when ice conditions allow; an alternate course is used when ice depth is unsafe. The alternate course uses a 30-acre pond at Blanca Vista Park and part of a levee trail system.
The event distance is 5K. Organizers provide ice-themed awards and use chip timing. Packet pickup is available the evening before at Knee Knockers Bar & Grill and on the morning of the race at the Alamosa Senior Citizens Center. Race registration does not include a shirt; shirts may be purchased separately for $15 if preordered by December 31, 2026. Registration opens October 1, 2026 and closes December 1, 2026. The standard registration fee is $20.00.
The course offers views of the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges from the San Luis Valley when held on the river. Organizers note that participants wear a range of footwear for traction; running shoes with microspikes, hiking boots, or other shoes with extra tread are recommended for snow and ice.
