Red Dirt Ultra
The Red Dirt Ultra is an annual trail running event held in the Kisatchie National Forest near Provencal, Louisiana. The race takes place on the Sandstone and Caroline Dormon trail systems, which are multi-use backcountry routes shared with ATV riders and equestrians. Participants navigate a variety of surfaces, including loose and hard-packed sand, rocks, mud, and water crossings. The course features rolling pine hills, sandy ridgelines, and sections alongside the Kisatchie Bayou.
The event offers three distinct distances, with all approximate measurements:
- 35 km (~22 miles): An out and back course starting counter-clockwise through longleaf pines and rolling hills.
- 50 km (~33 miles): A single clockwise loop with approximately 3,000 feet of elevation gain.
- 100 km (~66 miles): Two clockwise loops totaling approximately 6,000 feet of elevation gain.
The trails move through protected ecosystems and remote forest areas. Aid stations are situated along the route and are stocked with supplies, including vegan options at the mid-loop station and the finish line. All race distances share a midnight cutoff time. For the 100 km event, participants have 18 hours to complete the course, requiring a steady pace to manage the changing terrain and environmental elements.
