Race the Train - Bury to Rawtenstall
Race the Train is a family-run point to point trail race that starts at East Lancashire Railway Bolton St, Bury and runs north to Rawtenstall alongside the East Lancashire Railway and the River Irwell. The course is approximately 11 miles and follows trails beside the railway for much of the route.
The event features a steam train that travels ahead of the runners, stops to change tracks, then continues north, creating the experience of literally racing the train. Weather permitting, an alternative diesel train may be used. Friends and family can buy concessionary train tickets to ride the train and cheer runners along the route; these tickets are sold separately from race entry.
Race day arrangements include on site registration on Platform 3, with registration typically opening at 09:00 on the morning of the race and closing at 10:25. The event uses a cut off time of 2 hours 40 minutes. There are water stations along the course and marshals positioned to support runners.
Every finisher receives a custom-designed medal and a T-shirt. Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female, 1st in each veteran category, and 1st male and female teams. The event is organised by a family team experienced in running events. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
