Race for the Refuge
Race for the Refuge is held at the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge in Sudbury, MA on October 25, 2026. The event starts at the refuge Visitor’s Center and follows marked trails through ponds, pine and oak forest, and past former military bunkers.
The course uses double-track trails composed of dirt and gravel. The route is fully marked and three course marshals will be stationed at key turns.
Event formats:
- 10K one loop
- 30K three loops
- 6-hour timed event with multiple loops counted toward final mileage
Runners in the timed event may complete as many loops as desired; final mileage counts only completed loops and ranking is by most loops and then by time. Pacers are allowed for the 6-hour event only; pacers must register and check in, one pacer per runner at a time, and no muling is permitted. Pacers may use aid stations at no cost.
There will be two aid stations: the main station at the start/finish and a second station at Taylor Road about halfway through the loop. This is a cupless race; participants must carry and pack out any personal fuel. Typical aid station items include water, hydration mix, snacks, banana halves, and soft drinks.
Top male, female, and nonbinary finishers in each event will receive prizes, as will top finishers in the 40+ age category. No refunds or deferrals; proceeds support refuge site improvements, nature education, and a donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Metrowest.
