The 4th Annual Paine Mountain Trail Races
The Paine Mountain Trail Race, also known as the "Anchor Challenge," takes place on the Norwich University campus and the surrounding trails of Paine Mountain. This event serves as a fundraiser for the Norwich University Cross Country program to support the development of their home course and trail improvements in the Town of Northfield.
Participants can choose from two primary trail race distances:
- 7+ miles: The Paine Summit race involving a climb to the mountain peak.
- 6 km: The Anchor Challenge race, which includes a 4-person team competition category.
- 200 m to 1 mile: Free youth races for younger participants.
The course utilizes the Norwich home cross country course and the mountain trail system. The event includes specific competitive markers, such as the "Queen and King of the Summit" and "Anchor" prizes for the first runners to reach designated points on the course. Overall awards are presented to the top finishers and winners of 10-year age divisions.
The race starts and finishes at the Shaw Outdoor Center. All pre-registered participants receive a commemorative gift. After the races, a celebration is held featuring music, refreshments, and a raffle for all registered runners. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
