Comeragh Nav Challenge
The Nav Challenge 1 - Comeraghs is a navigational event located in County Waterford. This competition takes place on Coillte property and open mountain terrain, where participants must navigate using only a map and a compass. The use of GPS or other electronic navigation devices is strictly prohibited. At the start, runners receive a punch card and a list of grid references and descriptions for various controls. These controls can be visited in any order. While the route is not marked, a master map showing the control locations becomes available for reference eight minutes after the event begins.
Participants can choose between two main distance options:
- 16 km long course with approximately 500 m of climb through forest and open mountain.
- 8 km short course with approximately 200 m to 300 m of climb, primarily following tracks and trails.
The event requires specific mandatory equipment, classified as Level C advanced kit. This includes a waterproof jacket with an integrated hood and taped seams, waterproof full leg cover, a hat or buff, gloves, a whistle, and a foil blanket or bivvy bag. Additionally, runners must carry emergency food, a map of the area, a compass, a charged mobile phone, and the means to carry at least 500 mL of water.
Parking and toilet facilities are located at Powers the Pot camping. Registration takes place approximately 750 m from the parking area. Participants should bring a writing implement to mark their maps and their own cup for post-race refreshments. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
