About the race

The National Forest Way Ultra is a supported long-distance trail race covering 75 miles (120 km) across the English Midlands. The route starts at Alrewas Showground and finishes at Beacon Hill Country Park, passing through Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire and linking ancient woodland, former mining landscapes and rolling farmland over varied trail terrain. The first runner to reach Beacon Hill receives the honour of lighting the Beacon Race Events Beacon.

The event provides six fully stocked checkpoints with refreshments and medical support, professional event medical cover, GPS race tracking, free race photography and a finisher's medal. It is an official UTMB Index Race in the 100K category; finishers receive a UTMB Index score for this race category but the event does not award Running Stones for the UTMB Mont-Blanc lottery.

Entry rules require entrants to be at least 20 years old, in good health and to have previously completed a marathon. Mandatory kit must be carried throughout the course and includes a headtorch with backup light source, waterproof jacket, survival blanket or bivvy bag, minimum 1 litre water capacity, mobile phone, whistle, nutrition and a GPX route file. Random kit checks may take place.

A team relay option allows teams of three where each runner must complete at least 20 miles; changeovers are restricted to designated checkpoints. Drop bags are allowed at Checkpoint 4 and the finish with maximum dimensions 40cm x 35cm x 20cm. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
