About the race
The MTC Banshee is a standalone 44.4-mile ultra running stage that also forms Day 5 of the 14-day MizMal® end-to-end footrace. The route starts at Limerick City Hotel and finishes at Dough, Miltown Malbay in County Clare, carrying competitors from city streets into rural countryside and toward the Atlantic coast. Total ascent is 1,989 ft with 1,994 ft of descent. There are four checkpoints on the course at approximately 9.0, 17.0, 25.4 and 34.2 miles offering food, drinks and race support; checkpoint food includes malt loaf, sandwiches, sweets, water and squash.
Competitors must maintain an average pace of at least 4 mph and observe published cut-offs (finish cut-off 11 hrs 06 mins). The route is not fully signed; competitors must navigate using supplied GPX files and maps and carry required navigation equipment. Entry is restricted to those aged 18 or over. Standard and Plus entry options are offered: Standard entry includes race entry, bespoke finisher medal, trophies for the male and female champions, GPS tracking and checkpoint support; Plus entry adds an embroidered technical shirt and a lightweight hi-vis jacket.
Places for standalone entries are limited. Each competitor carries a GPS tracking device with an SOS facility. A mandatory kit list applies, including backpack, head torch with spare batteries, navigation device or compass, whistle, mobile phone, emergency food and a basic first aid kit.
