About the race

The Mt. Taylor 50K is a nonprofit, runner-built mountain ultra held on Mt. Taylor near Grants, New Mexico. The race route climbs to the summit at 11,301 feet and features roughly 7,000 feet of total elevation gain and loss as it moves through pine and aspen stands, open alpine meadows, volcanic ridgelines, and sections of the Continental Divide Trail. Terrain includes singletrack, forest roads, rocky ridgelines, smooth forest floor, and high meadows.

Aid stations are located at key points along the course and are stocked with water, electrolyte drinks, sodas, and trail snacks. Runners are advised to monitor altitude and hydration. A GPX file has been provided to registered participants for navigation.

The event emphasizes respect for the mountain and its cultural significance. Mt. Taylor, known as Tsoodzil in Diné tradition, is described as one of the four sacred mountains and a southern guardian of the Navajo homeland. The race supports community organizations, including Navajo YES, and is organized in partnership with local groups and sponsors.

Logistics notes include packet pick up dates on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 and Friday, September 25, 2026, and race day on Saturday, September 26, 2026. The start area is at the Rock Tank Shelter in the Cibola National Forest with limited parking near the shelter and additional spots in nearby camping areas. High clearance vehicles may access deeper meadow parking. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
