Moturoa Backyard Ultra : Rough Island, Nelson
Moturoa Backyard Ultra is scheduled for 12 September 2026 on Rough Island in Nelson. The event uses a measured loop of 6.706 km (4.167 miles) that runners repeat each hour; a new lap starts on the hour. The format requires each participant to complete a lap within the hour and be ready to start the next lap or be recorded as a DNF. The event continues until only one runner completes a solo lap and is recorded as the sole finisher.
The 6.706 km lap length is chosen so that 24 laps equal 100 miles. The race is self supported with no aid stations on the course. Runners may not receive aid or support from others while on the course, and the use of poles or other artificial aids is not permitted. With the exception of toilet stops, runners must remain on the course until their lap is completed; a toilet is located about 4 km into the loop and additional facilities are in the event village.
Entries open 1st June, the entry fee is $50, and entries are limited to 250. Parking is available only in designated areas near the event village, with additional car parks around the island that require a walk to the village. At registration entrants are allocated a tent area for their support crew, with size dependent on planned laps. Access to the island is via a gate that opens at sunrise and closes at dusk; overnight DNF runners must remain on the island until the gate reopens.
