Millinocket Marathon & Half
The Millinocket Marathon & Half is a free, volunteer-organized road race held in Millinocket, Maine. The event features two distances:
- Marathon (two loops, 26.2 miles)
- Half‑Marathon (one loop, 13.1 miles)
Both courses are USATF certified (Marathon ME16007JK; Half ME16008JK) and may be used to qualify for major marathons. The loop course begins on Penobscot Avenue and includes a paved climb on Poplar Road for the first mile, about six miles on the Golden Road (a gravel, privately owned logging road run under permit), and roughly six miles of pavement returning on Millinocket Lake Road into town. Runners must keep to the left side of the road, facing oncoming traffic.
The race is chip timed with timing chips adhered to the back of bib numbers; bibs must be worn on the front. Water stops are not guaranteed, though community and runner-driven pop-up support has occurred. There is no official sag wagon.
The event is organized entirely by unpaid volunteers. Although there is no formal entry fee, donations are strongly encouraged to cover essential race expenses such as timing, course certification, portable toilets, bus transportation, and insurance. The Maine Sports Commission estimates the event contributes approximately $2.5M to $3M annually to the local economy.
The race runs on unceded territory of the Wabanaki Confederacy; the organizers provide a land acknowledgement and related resources. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
