The majority of the course follows the Ice Age Trail, a 1,000 mile footpath contained entirely within Wisconsin and designated as a National Scenic Trail. The route passes through rocky terrain, open prairies, single track, dirt forest roads, forested sections, and areas near lakes.
Organizers rent the Spearhead campground for runners in the lead up to the race; campground space is limited and reservations are arranged through the event. The race weekend includes planned social activities on the Thursday before the race.
