About the race

Medicine Run Ultra & Relay is a trail event at Kihcihkaw Askî - Sacred Land in Edmonton, Alberta, held September 5–6, 2026. The race uses a 12.5 kilometre loop on single and double track through Edmonton River Valley trails. Solo runners and relay teams can complete repeated loops, with options that allow up to 100 kilometres within a 24 hour period.

Distances offered include:

  • 5 km youth and elders event
  • 25 km solo and relay
  • 50 km solo and relay
  • 50 mile solo
  • 100 km solo and relay

Relay rules require a minimum of two registered teammates. Team size limits apply: maximum four for 50 km, maximum six for 75 km, and maximum eight for 100 km. Each runner must complete a 12.5 kilometre loop before the next runner starts; teams pass a hand carved wooden feather between runners. Participants retrieve a prayer flag at the farthest point of each loop and return it to the start area to record a finished loop.

Aid stations are stocked with a variety of food and drink including soup, broth, grilled cheese, pickles, fruit, chips, cookies, bannock and jam, water, sports drink, pemmican and some gels. Mandatory gear includes a headlamp for night running, whistle, hydration and a phone. Parking is available at Kihcihkaw Askî and porta potties are located at Kihcihkaw Askî and Snow Valley. Team tents are allowed at the field with a maximum size of 10 x 10 ft. A contingency plan keeps runners on double track in case of rain.
