About the race

MD Heat Trail Race is a trail running event in the Patapsco Pickall Area near Johnnycake Road in Elkridge, MD. The event offers the following distances:

  • 50K
  • 25K

The course is primarily rolling single track with two river crossings and a short paved section near a parking area. Runners encounter more than 2000 ft of vertical gain with several sustained climbs. Some sections are rocky and technical while others are smooth and runnable. The course includes three out-and-back sections; one out-and-back reaches Valley Overlook where competitors must pick up a wrist band. For the 50K, athletes complete two loops of the 25K course and must collect a wrist band at Valley Overlook on each loop.

Aid stations are placed at approximately 2 miles, 5.25 miles, 8 miles, 11.5 miles, and 16 miles. Aid stations supply Tailwind and water and a selection of real food items; gels are not provided, so athletes who prefer gels should carry them.

The start and finish area is adjacent to two large pavilions with nearby parking and toilet facilities. An after-party with craft beer and food is held at the finish area. Parking on-site is available but limited. Organizers use volunteer staff to assist at aid stations and course points. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
