About the race
Mafate Trail Tour (MTT) is a trail running event held in the cirque de Mafate with multiple route options that loop around or through the island's ilets, all starting and finishing at Grand-Îlet. The 2026 edition includes three distinct race formats with approximate distances and elevation gains:
- 38 km, about 2100 m D+
- 54 km, about 3500 m D+
- 70 km, about 4800 m D+
The 54 km and 70 km routes follow much of the cirque's perimeter from Grand-Îlet, passing points such as Plaine des Merles, Col des Bœufs, La Nouvelle, Roche Plate, Ilet des Orangers, Grand Place and Ilet à Bourse, then return via the sentier Scout. The 70 km route additionally visits most of Mafate's ilets including Marla, Les Lataniers, Cayenne, Ilet à Malheur and Aurère before the Scout descent back to Grand-Îlet.
The course profiles feature long descending sections in early parts and demanding climbs later; runners should note a notable climb and subsequent descent from Cayenne on the 54 km and 70 km routes. The event provides official GPX traces and mapped courses for each distance and publishes past race results and photo galleries. Bib distribution is scheduled on specific days before the race; eco-dossards are not permitted and no bibs are issued on race day. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
