About the race
The Lüneburg Trail Run is a multi-distance trail event held at the Lüneburg Congregation in Luneburg, KwaZulu-Natal. Races start and finish at the race village by the church and follow trails around the Ncaga mountain and surrounding ridges. Terrain includes cattle trails, rough technical singletrack, rocky descents, jeep tracks and farm roads with varied elevation and scenic viewpoints.
Available race distances:
- 65 km ultra with about 2400 m elevation and six checkpoints.
- 23 km mountain trail with about 860 m elevation and four water points.
- 10 km beginner trail with about 279 m elevation and three water points.
- 5 km fun run with one checkpoint.
The 65 km course features a steep initial climb to the Ncaga mountaintop, multiple stream crossings for refilling, a long rocky descent described as a "dragon’s back," and several checkpoints including a highest point at roughly 32 km. Organisers list compulsory gear for the 65 km race with time penalties for missing items; required items include trail running shoes, headlamp, GPS device with course loaded, waterproof jacket, running pack with 2 L capacity, charged phone and basic first aid. Cut-off times are published per distance and per checkpoint. Entry categories include racepack items such as T-shirt and socks for some classes and different entry prices per distance.
