Living History Farms Race
The Living History Farms Race is a 5-mile off road run across the museum grounds at Living History Farms in Urbandale. The course is described as passing through 300 years of agricultural history and runs through three historic farm sites, beginning and ending in the 1876 town of Walnut Hill.
Runners follow trails that include stream crossings, farm fields, and woodland paths. Animals such as horses, cows, sheep, and pigs can be seen from the course. Any participant who has not reached the halfway point within one hour may be asked to board the sag wagon.
All finishers receive a commemorative race shirt celebrating America 250 and a cowbell medal. Awards are given to the top male and female overall and to the top male and female in each age division. Registered runners must be at least 14 years old. Age divisions are 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80+.
A costume contest is part of the event with categories for best individual, best group, and best patriotic/U.S. semiquincentennial costume. A separate free Kids’ Run is offered with age-appropriate courses; advance registration is requested.
