Leaden Boot Challenge

The Leaden Boot Challenge is a long-distance walk and run centred on the village of Alstonefield in the White Peak. The event covers 26.2 miles with approximately 4800 feet of ascent and descent and has a maximum time limit of 12 hours. The route is elliptical, starting and finishing in Alstonefield.

There are six manned checkpoints and two unmanned checkpoints spaced at about four mile intervals. Each manned checkpoint offers water, squash, snacks, first aid facilities and mobile communications linked to the Memorial Hall for additional support. Participants who retire during the event will be transported back to the start.

Locally made hot food and cakes are provided to all participants at the finish and are included in the entry fee. Certificates and cloth badges are issued to those who complete the challenge. The event follows LDWA guidelines and is open to walkers and runners.

The route passes through Milldale, Baley Hill, Nabs Dale, Ilam Rock, Aires Cottage, Bunster Hill, Ilam Hall, Musden Woods, Slade House Farm, Throwley Hall, Grindon, Wetton Mill, Ecton Hill, Hulme End, Sheen, Pilsbury, Hartington, Beresford Dale and Narrow Dale before returning to Alstonefield.

Dogs are not permitted to accompany participants from 2024 onwards. Applications to enter open 1 October 2026 on Sientries.co.uk. The challenge raises funds for local causes; this year £8,200 was donated and the event has raised over £45,000 to date. Grant applications for amounts between £200 and £2,000 are invited from April 2025. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
