Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge
The Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge is a mountain trail event held at Friend Park Campground in Medicine Bow National Forest near Douglas, WY. The program includes a 24 hour mountain endurance event, a 12 hour challenge with a rolling start window, and a single summit challenge that consists of one ascent and descent. The 24 hour format scores competitors by completed summit laps with miles covered used as a tie breaker; every finisher receives a commemorative award.
The route climbs from the campground through dense pine, rocky mule deer paths, narrow ridgelines, and granite outcrops to near 10,000 feet. The course is technical, steep, and remote, with significant elevation change and rapidly changing mountain weather each lap.
Lap details:
- About 9 miles per full lap.
- Nearly 3,000 feet of vertical gain and loss per lap.
Basecamp at Friend Park Campground is the only aid station on course and provides water, electrolytes, coffee, fresh fruit, snacks, made-to-order hot food, drop-bag space, crew access, and overnight fire pits when allowed. Medical coverage is provided on site by the Douglas Volunteer Fire Department.
Recommended gear and planning include a running vest with 1.5–2 L water capacity, warm layers, a reliable headlamp with spare batteries, trail shoes with good rock traction, trekking poles, emergency layer, and practicing a nutrition plan of roughly 200–300 calories per hour.
