About the race
The Krayzie Midwinter Backyard Ultra is an endurance event held at Spencer Park, 100 Heyders Rd, Spencerville, Christchurch. It uses a repeating-lap format in which competitors must complete each lap within one hour; each lap is 6.706 km with about 20–40 m of elevation gain per lap. The event is scheduled for 26 June 2027 and will recur each Matariki weekend thereafter until the organiser retires.
Each entrant is allocated a 3 m x 4 m space in the event village for an aid-area gazebo. No campers or wheeled aid areas are allowed inside the event village, though park cabins, huts and caravan sites are available separately for overnight stays. The venue includes flushing toilets, hot showers, washing machines and dryers, a heated lodge with power and device charging, and extra water on hand.
The event operates strict course and conduct rules. Each loop starts exactly one hour after the prior start; runners who miss the start bell cannot begin that lap. Runners may not leave the course except for toilet stops, and no personal aid is allowed while on a lap. Use of noise-blocking headphones is prohibited. A quiet zone applies between dusk and dawn to allow rest for runners, crews and volunteers. The winner is the last person to complete a loop; all others are recorded as DNF. The event is self-supported; entrants must provide their own food and fluids and keep required cold-weather and recovery gear at their aid area.
