Kettlebell Kountdown at Oak Mountain State Park
The Kettlebell Kountdown is a 50K elimination race held on October 10, 2026 in Pelham, Alabama. The course is a clearly marked one-mile loop that competitors repeat for a total of 31 laps, which equals 31 miles or a 50K. Each lap has a specific time limit that decreases as the competition progresses; failure to complete a lap within its time limit results in elimination and removal from the course. Only runners who complete lap 31 receive an official finisher medal, and only those finishers are eligible for the awards.
Every runner must carry a 20-pound kettlebell for the duration of each one-mile loop. At least one hand must remain in contact with the kettlebell at all times. Organizers provide kettlebells; carrying a personal kettlebell is not allowed. Permitted carrying methods include holding the kettlebell by the side, in front, behind, or resting it on a shoulder, chest, or upper back while maintaining hand contact. Prohibited methods include using ropes, chains, bags, vests, throwing the kettlebell, or otherwise attaching it to equipment. Runners may rest the kettlebell on the ground but must pick it up and carry it to advance.
The event has two divisions, male and female. Awards for each division go to the top three finishers in lap 31, with custom kettlebells awarded for first through third place. All participants must be 18 or older. Race day packet pickup is at the Lakeside Pavilion near the south trailhead parking area. Organizers provide a custom t-shirt, and basic aid such as water and light snacks will be available; runners are responsible for their own supplies between laps. Crew assistance is allowed only in the start/finish area and no pacers are permitted on the course. The race proceeds rain or shine and later laps may require a headlamp.
