About the race
The Kerry Way Ultra is a marked ultramarathon that follows the full length of the Kerry Way route around the Iveragh Peninsula, covering approximately 200 km. The event uses Killarney Racecourse as the registration, start and finish venue. Two start waves are offered: an Early Start at 6am (Intermediate) with a 40 hour time limit, and a Late Start at 10am (Expert) with a 36 hour time limit. The Expert wave is eligible for the male podium; female podium places are taken from both waves combined.
Entry requires specific prior distance qualifications: completion in the previous calendar year of two marathons or one 50 mile ultra or one 100 km ultra. There are no refunds or deferrals. Maximum entries are limited to protect the trail.
Registration and mandatory gear checks take place at the racecourse on the Thursday before the race. Mandatory equipment includes full waterproof jacket and trousers, head torch (min 200 lumens) with spare batteries, paper route map (OSI Nos. 78, 83 and 84), a fully charged mobile phone, survival foil or bivy, whistle, first aid kit, gloves and hat, water and spare food, and a coloured ribbon to identify start wave. Trackers are provided and must be fixed to the rucksack.
Support crews may meet runners at designated crew stops along the route; a committee-managed bag drop serves several stops. Distances between crew stops are published, and basic tap or refill points and toilet facilities are provided at specified stops. The course finishes back at Killarney Racecourse, where an UltraBrunch and prizegiving are scheduled on the Sunday. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
