About the race

Kangaroobie Base Camp Ultra Relay is a two-day trail running relay organised by the Princetown Institute of Sport. Teams are four or more runners who rotate through a night-time graveyard shift as part of the event. The overall course covers more than 216 km across three distinct trail types that run through farmland and bush at Kangaroobie, with the Southern Ocean and the 12 Apostles Coast forming a coastal backdrop.

The format is a team relay where team members do not run together but support each other between legs. On each rotation runners complete looped stages of varied length; examples from previous events include these lap distances:

  • 6 km
  • 9 km
  • 12 km

The event takes place on private land near Princetown and includes muddy paddocks and forest trails. Previous editions involved extended running periods—around 30 hours of activity reported by participants—and a pattern of multiple laps per runner. Between runs teams regroup at a base camp to eat, rest, shower, and assist teammates. The organisers describe the event as not-for-profit, aimed at creating accessible outdoor sport opportunities, and acknowledge the Eastern Maar nation as Traditional Owners of the country where the event is held.
