About the race
Riverway Insomnia is an overnight backyard ultra format event at the Riverway Precinct in Townsville on 26–27 September 2026. Runners complete repeated laps of a 4.2 km loop, with each lap starting on the hour and laps alternating direction between anticlockwise and clockwise. A mid-lap timing checkpoint at Turtle Bridge validates each completed lap.
Event options
- Insomnia 100 Ultra 100 km total distance over 24 hours
- Insomnia 42 Marathon 42 km total distance over 10 hours
Both events can be entered solo or as a team of 2 to 4, with any team member able to run any lap as long as someone starts on the hour. Winners are decided by lowest aggregated time across completed laps in each event. Failure to start a lap within the allowed window or to complete a lap results in a DNF; runners who DNF must report to Race HQ.
Operational details include mandatory bib wear with loss of bib leading to DNF, a recommended race belt available at registration for $15, an emergency contact verified at registration, and physio support provided at scheduled intervals. Live lap results are available during the event. The recovery area is fenced and secure with no event power available; participants are asked to bring headlamps, chargers, food and fluids, sun protection, and other personal items. There is a strict leave no trace policy and no swimming in the lagoon. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
