Ice Ultra

The Ice Ultra is a 230 km self sufficient ultra marathon across the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland. The race covers five stages over five days and the full event runs across seven days from arrival to departure. The route passes through snowfields, Arctic tundra and frozen lakes, including a 15 km frozen lake stage designated as the Red Jersey stage.

Participants carry mandatory kit and most food throughout the event while the race team carries each runner’s sleeping bag. Checkpoints are placed at approximately every 10 km and offer a small shelter, a qualified medic and drinking water. Camps provide clean drinking water and boiling water for preparing freeze dried meals. Routes are marked through a UNESCO World Heritage area and runners should expect long periods of running in darkness because daylight hours are limited.

Typical daytime temperatures are listed between -5°C and -40°C and evening temperatures between -10°C and -40°C. Base Camp is in Gällivare and the finish is in Jokkmokk. Accommodation during the event is in teepee tents and remote huts. The race uses GPS tracking and manned checkpoints and camps with medical and support staff. Entry details include a fee of £3,500 with an option to pay in four instalments and a deposit of £875. Places available are limited to 40. A marathon finish within 12 months is required to enter. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
