About the race
Heartland 50 is an ultrarunning event in Cassoday, KS, organized by KS Ultrarunners. The course is an out-and-back on backcountry gravel roads with less than one mile of paved surface, passing through open range and the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie where runners may encounter grazing cattle.
Distances offered:
- 50 Mile
- 50K
- 25K
Aid station and support details vary by distance. The 50 mile course includes five manned aid stations plus additional unmanned water points, with crew access at three locations and drop bag availability at all manned stations. The 50K has three manned aid stations and three drop bag access points. The 25K has one manned halfway turnaround aid station with drop bag access and no crew access there. Drop bags must be clearly marked with runner name and bib number and dropped at the start/finish staging area by the stated race deadline.
Course markings use metal washers tied with ribbon and, in dry conditions, flour on the road for some turns. All distances have a 15 hour cutoff and the 50 mile requires reaching the 25 mile turnaround within the listed cutoff window. Race day packet pickup is available at the Cassoday Community Center. All finishers receive a Sport-Tek tank top and a finisher award. Photos will be available for free download after the event.
Rules note that pacers and dogs are not allowed on the course, crew vehicles are not allowed on course sections, littering is prohibited, and runners must check in at each aid station. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
