About the race
King of the Hill is a last-person-standing ultramarathon held in Pyalong, VIC. Competitors run a loop that includes two major climbs and one very steep descent over a course of 4.2 km with about 300 m of elevation gain. The surface is mainly grassy with small rocks in places.
The format requires each runner to complete the circuit once every hour. Failure to complete a lap or to finish within the hourly cutoff results in elimination; the event continues until a single athlete remains. Participants must be 18 years or older.
Each athlete receives a 3 m x 3 m rest area near the start line to use between laps. The event provides on-site medical staff, physio and ice-bath recovery, live results tracking via an app, professional photography and videography, and a live broadcast of laps. Support crews are allowed but only up to three people in a rest area at any one time. Parking requires a paid pass.
Cash prizes announced for 2027 total $39,000 AUD, including a grand prize of $15,000, $10,000 awards for last male and last female standing, and prizes for fastest laps and special awards such as the Sherpa Award and the Hard Yards Award. Finishers receive a medal engraved with their final lap count. The race runs in all weather with an alternative course in extreme rain.
