About the race
(Day before) Halloween Vampire Rogaine is a social orienteering event on Friday 30 October at Rabbit Island, Tasman, New Zealand. The format is a mix of rogaining and tag: participants carry a rogaine map and an answer sheet while a small number of people start as "vampires" who try to tag others. When a participant is tagged they exchange roles with the vampire—the newly tagged person becomes the vampire and the ex-vampire returns to collecting controls.
The event runs for 60 minutes and the finish "Sanctuary" opens after 45 minutes; the winner is the person holding the map and answer sheet with the most controls collected. Participants should bring their own pen or highlighter. Halloween dress is optional and there is a prize for best dressed. All main roads on the course remain open during the event, so participants must take care when crossing roads.
Entry fees per person are listed as five dollars for junior and senior club members and ten dollars for non-club members. Pre-registration is preferred so the correct number of maps can be prepared, but on-the-day electronic payment is possible with a card and mobile phone.
