Groundhog Grind Trail Run
The Groundhog Grind Trail Run is the sixth running and opens the Altoona Running Club's 2027 race season. It is held at Thomas Mitchell Park, east of Altoona, Iowa, with the start area in the campground.
The event offers multiple distances:
- 5k one 5k loop
- 10k two 5k loops
- 15k includes an additional loop across the road at the Boy Scout camp area
- 5k virtual ideally run at Thomas Mitchell Park; no awards
- 10k virtual ideally run at Thomas Mitchell Park; no awards
- 15k virtual ideally run at Thomas Mitchell Park; no awards
The course is marked with ribbons, cones and directional arrows. Distances will be measured by GPS and may not be exact. The event uses chip timing. Runners are responsible for following the course; if a runner goes off course they must return to the location where they left the route. Failure to complete the full marked course will result in disqualification.
Course features include a red bridge, DeVotie Hill and the Dewitt DeVotie grave stone marker, Groundhog Gulch, Bone Chiller Prairie, Thomas Mitchell Pond and Camp Creek. Winter weather and snow can affect trail conditions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
