Granite Grit Trail Challenge

Granite Grit is a timed endurance trail event on private property in Ballandean in the Granite Belt, Queensland. Competitors run a fully marked, rugged 5 km trail lap each hour. Each lap includes about 180 m of elevation gain and the course features granite outcrops, rocky trail and repeated climbing over multiple laps.

Runners must complete one lap on the hour, every hour. If a runner fails to return to the start within the hour their race ends. The event continues until only one runner remains able to complete a lap. If more than one runner reaches the final 24th hour, that lap becomes a head to head race and the first to the finish is declared the winner.

The event is timed to winter conditions at roughly 750 m above sea level; nights can be cold with frost possible. Organisers note that layering, nutrition and management of sleep deprivation are important. The field is capped at 100 runners and the winner receives a single cash prize of $1,000. Registrations open 1 June and the event charges tiered entry fees for early, general and late registration periods. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
