Goyt Valley Challenge

The Goyt Valley Challenge is a High Peak local group challenge event held in the Central England / Peak District area. The event base is Buxton Community School, College Road, Buxton, Derbyshire SK17 9EA, with car parking at the College Road entrance as directed by marshals. The meeting location is also referenced at what3words sapping.sharp.surveyors.

A choice of routes is offered:

  • 26.2 miles through the Western Peak District including Axe Edge, Goyt Valley, Shining Tor, Lamaload Reservoir, Kettleshulme, Taxal Moor and Fernilee Dam, total ascent about 4000 ft.
  • 14.3 miles through the Western Peak District to Axe Edge and the Goyt Valley, returning via Fernilee Dam, total ascent about 2000 ft.

Under 18s may take part only when accompanied by a responsible adult. Parts of the routes cross moorland and areas of the Peak District National Park; participants are advised to carry suitable footwear, waterproofs, warm clothing, map, compass and whistle. Dogs are not permitted. Refreshments are provided at checkpoints and a hot meal is available at the finish. Certificates are available to finishers on request. A multi distance walking and running event based in Hathersage with routes from 25 km to 100 miles. Teams and qualified solo entrants can self navigate or join led groups with professional Mountain Leaders.
A 40 mile ultramarathon around the Peak District starting and finishing in Buxton, following trails and roads through Goyt Valley, Mam Tor, Cave Dale and the Monsal Trail. The 40th anniversary edition is scheduled for 19 September 2026.
