Gecko Rock Trail Run
Gecko Rock Trail Run is the fifth event in the Montagu Winter Trail Run Series, held at Gecko Rock Private Nature Reserve on 16th August. The reserve features restored succulent Karoo vegetation, diverse trails for hiking and cycling, rock climbing and 4x4 routes, and regular wildlife movements. Participants may encounter Cape Mountain Zebra, Gemsbuck, Grey Rhebok and smaller species while moving through the reserve's vegetation.
The event offers multiple distance options that run through sections of pristine Karoo and a mix of trail types:
- 7 km Fun Run 104 m ascent; walkers and runners share the succulent Karoo section.
- 10.8 km Trail Run 247 m ascent; mix of single track and jeep track.
- 16 km Trail Run 470 m ascent; continues onto the 4wd trail with significant climbing.
Routes were changed from 2025 so walkers and runners now go through the same succulent Karoo section, and the 7 km route is flatter than the previous 5 km route.
Logistics note: parking is ample at the event location. Entry fees range from R100 to R350. Food and drinks are available for sale on site. Walkers who want a medal can request one on the day for an additional R30; walker entry covers participation and water point only. Gecko Rock Private Nature Reserve lies in the Nougaspoort Valley, about 25 km from Touwsrivier, with accommodation options from camping to self-catering cottages and activities such as hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, 4x4 routes, succulent tours, bird watching and star gazing.
