Furbutt’s Backyard 24 Hour : Meadowood Special Recreation Area
Furbutt’s Backyard is a 24 hour Backyard-format ultrarunning event held on Saturday, May 29, 2027, at Meadowood Special Recreation Area on Mason Neck, near Lorton, Fairfax County, Virginia. The start/finish area is at the Mustang Trailhead, at the corner of Gunston Road and Harley Road, beneath a large horse pavilion.
The event uses an hourly loop format: runners have one hour to complete a 4.167 mile loop and must be at the start corral at the top of each hour to begin the next loop or be eliminated. The event enforces a 24 hour / 100 mile limit. Each loop includes about 300-350 feet of elevation gain; total ascent/descent listed is 7,800 feet. The course begins with 0.7 miles on a flat grassy field, then follows mostly wooded bridle trails of dirt and crushed gravel with gentle ups and downs.
Entry opens March 23, 2027, and is limited to 100 runners. There is a $25 entry fee to cover permit and event expenses. The club will provide water, ice, Gatorade, and some snacks; runners should bring additional food and beverages for their personal aid station. One central aid station under the pavilion is open to runners and their crews; crew access is restricted to that area and physical exchanges inside the corral are not allowed after a yard begins. Parking is in the grass field behind the pavilion.
