Furbutt's Backyard 24 Hour

Furbutt’s Backyard 24 Hour is the Virginia Happy Trails Running Club’s Backyard format event with a 24 hour / 100 mile limit. It is held over Memorial Day in the Meadowood Special Recreation Area on Mason Neck, near Lorton in southern Fairfax County, Virginia. The start and finish are located at the corner of Gunston Road and Harley Road beneath a large horse pavilion. Entry opens on March 23, 2027 and is limited to 100 runners; a $25 fee is charged to help cover event expenses.

The event follows the Backyard format: runners have one hour to complete a 4.167 mile loop and must be at the start line at the top of the next hour to continue. The course is composed of bridle trails that are mostly wooded with some open meadows. The loop begins with 0.7 miles on a flat, open grassy field, then transitions to dirt and crushed gravel bridle trails with gentle ups and downs. Elevation gain per loop is about 300 to 350 feet, with total ascent and descent listed as 7,800 feet.

A single aid station is located under the horse pavilion and will provide water, ice, Gatorade, and snacks. Runners should bring any additional food or personal supplies they anticipate needing. Crews are allowed only at the main aid station and must follow corral rules and timed warnings. The club does not provide medical personnel or medical supplies; runners are responsible for their own health and safety and should plan accordingly. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
