Freedom Backyard Ultra Marathon (FBUM 2027)
The Freedom Backyard Ultra Marathon is a Last Man Standing style backyard ultra scheduled for June 5, 2027 at the Missouri Freedom Camp in Bourbon, Missouri, at 5992 Highway C. The event uses the backyard ultra format: competitors run repeated segments called Yards until only one person completes a Yard more than all others.
The measured course must be exactly 4 miles 880 feet long, the metric equivalent 6.7056 kilometers, and may be run as a loop or out-and-back. Each Yard begins one hour after the previous Yard. Competitors must be inside the starting corral at the bell, complete each Yard in under an hour to have it count, and may not leave the course during a Yard except for restroom breaks. No personal or artificial aids are allowed during a Yard. Results are reported by Yards completed and the last runner to complete a Yard is declared the winner; if no one completes one more Yard than others, there is no winner. The event has no fixed finish cap and is open ended.
The course covers undulating Midwest terrain with rolling hills, creek crossings, fields, short gravel road sections, and technical wooded trails. About half the course is wooded and shaded. The corral and primary aid are located at the barn next to the farmhouse. A main aid station at the barn will provide food, drinks, and supplements for the duration of the event, with a small water point along the course.
Onsite camping is available and hotels are about 15 minutes away in Sullivan, Missouri. Race shirts are offered to entrants who register before May 5th; later registrations are not guaranteed a shirt. There is a pre-event dinner the night before at the Missouri Freedom Camp. There are no refunds and all proceeds are donated to the Freedom 13 Organization, which develops recreational camps and housing projects for veterans, police officers, and their families.
