About the race
Fancy Nonsense is a grassroots trail ultra run moved to Deer Grove Forest Preserve for 2026 because of construction at Palos Forest Preserve. The event uses a 5.5 mile loop that runners repeat to reach their chosen distance. The loop is mostly single track with some double track sections and is described as entirely runnable.
Race logistics include marked course intersections, a short pre-race briefing, and a fully marked course map provided at packet pickup at Deer Grove West. Crews may contact runners only at aid stations. No pacers are allowed. There will be other people on the trails the day of the event.
Aid stations are placed according to distance and will be stocked with water, soda, snacks, doughnuts, and additional items. The event offers cash prizes for top finishers in men's, women's, and non-binary divisions: 1st $400, 2nd $200, 3rd $100.
The event description notes an informal, community-oriented approach and explicitly welcomes children and dogs on leash. The course format returns runners to the same aid area after each loop, with two aid stations for the 25K and five aid stations for the 50K.
