Event Overview

The Devil's Toll Race takes place on October 3, 2026, in Middle Brook, Missouri. This event traverses a rugged portion of the Ozark Trail, covering approximately 13 miles through scenic and technical terrain. The course transitions from the highest point in Missouri at Taum Sauk Mountain to Johnson Shut-ins State Park.

Participants can choose between two primary categories:

  • 1/2 Mar. Run
  • 1/2 Mar. Hike

The route passes several notable landmarks, including Mina Sauk Falls and the Devil's Toll Gate rock formation. It continues over Proffit and Wildcat Mountains, leading to a descent past the Taum Sauk reservoir scour and finishing with a crossing of the Black River. The terrain is characterized by rocky, technical sections and approximately 1,400 feet of elevation change.

Logistics and Requirements

The event is minimalist in nature. While a basic aid station is typically hosted mid-course, participants are required to carry their own water (at least 1 liter is required, 2 liters recommended) and nutritional supplies. All participants must use the provided shuttle service to reach the start line.

Registration includes custom commemorative patches for finishers. Proceeds from the event benefit the Ozark Trail Association (OTA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the maintenance and preservation of the Ozark Trail. Camping options are available at Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park, including a group campsite add-on for participants.

Course Rules

The event follows a "Leave No Trace" policy. No pets are permitted on the course, and smoking or vaping is prohibited on shuttles and the trail. Runners and hikers must adhere to specific time cutoffs, with all participants required to be off the course by 4:00 PM. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
