About the race
The Devil's Toll Race is a 13-mile trail event on the Ozark Trail near Middle Brook, MO, offered as both a 1/2 Marathon Run and a 1/2 Marathon Hike. The course travels from Taum Sauk Mountain past Mina Sauk Falls, through the rock formation known as Devils' Toll Gate, over Proffit and Wildcat Mountains, down past the Scour of Taum Sauk reservoir, and finishes with a Black River crossing at Johnson Shut-ins State Park.
The event takes place on rocky, technical terrain with about 1,400 feet of elevation change over the route. Organizers maintain a basic mid-course aid station but participants are asked to carry their own water and nutrition. Limited cell service is expected; AT&T typically works best. Recommended preparation includes prior experience on rugged trails of seven miles or more, basic navigation skills, and gear such as strong tread trail shoes or hiking boots, trekking poles, insect repellent, first aid supplies, and at least one liter of water (more for longer efforts). All participants must ride the shuttle to the start line. Race rules note no pets, a leave-no-trace policy, and that the event supports the Ozark Trail Association.
