Des Plaines River Trail Races
The Des Plaines River Trail Races take place October 9, 2027 in Lake County, IL. Organized by Ornery Mule Racing, the event starts and finishes at Half Day Forest Preserve and is the 16th edition of the event. The races follow an out and back along the northern segment of the Des Plaines River Trail.

The course runs on a flat, wide, crushed gravel trail that is generally free of roots and rocks. Runners pass alternating forests and open wetlands. Major road crossings are handled by bridges or viaducts; there are four minor road crossings on the 50K and 50 Mile courses, two on the marathon course, and none on the half marathon course. Parts of the trail can run through water and an alternate course will be used if flooding occurs.
The marathon is a Boston Qualifier. Time limits for the courses are: Half Marathon 9.5 hours, Marathon 10.5 hours, 50K 11.5 hours, 50 Mile 11.5 hours. The event is cup-less, so participants should bring a small cup, hydration pack, or water bottle for aid stations. Aid station staffing:
- Half Marathon: 2 manned, 2 unmanned
- Marathon: 6 manned, 2 unmanned
- 50K: 9 manned, 2 unmanned
- 50 Mile: 10 manned, 2 unmanned
Finisher medals are awarded for every distance, with additional belt buckles, award plaques, and age group prizes. Swag includes an event t-shirt if registered on or before August 15. Registration opens January 1, 2027. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
