Crater Trail Run : Van Peenen Memorial Park, Decorah, IA
The Crater Trail Run is a set of off-road trail races held at Van Peenen Memorial Park in Decorah, Iowa. The course uses single-track trails that are part of a 17+ mile system of mountain bike trails. Trails are groomed and marked. The event lists multiple distances with approximate climb amounts:
- 1 Mile (Kids Mile)
- 5K: 3.2 miles, 613 feet climbing.
- 10K: 6.3 miles, 1,383 feet climbing.
- 25K: 15.5 miles, 2,750 feet climbing.
- 50K: 31.1 miles, 5,500+ feet climbing.
Aid stations provide water, hydration drink and food as supplies last. Specific aid and drop-bag locations vary by distance; for example, 50K runners have a drop-bag location at the start and stations at the Van Peenen entrance, the Palisades Park entrance, and Death Valley (which 50K runners pass multiple times). Shorter distances use some of the same stations.
Packet pick-up and check-in occur the day before the races at the Decorah Hatchery. The event includes overall awards for each race and an on-site raffle. Proceeds are split between the Northeast Iowa Montessori School, Decorah Human Powered Trails and Decorah Park & Rec. The event is presented as a small grassroots fundraiser and will proceed in typical outdoor conditions unless extreme weather forces a change.
