About the race
Coalfields Backyard Ultra is a Lazarus Lake sanctioned Last Runner Standing event held on May 28, 2027 in Williamson, West Virginia. The race is organized by Tug Valley Road Runners and will be staged at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College.
The course is a measured out-and-back loop of 4.1667 miles (2.08 miles out and 2.08 miles back). The route runs from the college onto an asphalt path along the West Williamson flood wall, passes Williamson PK-8 school, goes through a neighborhood and past a recreation area to a turnaround at 2.08 miles. The surface is primarily asphalt and is described as very flat. One section can become saturated in heavy rain and may be redirected alongside a guardrail.
The event follows standard backyard ultra rules. Loops begin every hour and competitors must start on the bell; warnings are given at 3, 2, and 1 minutes before each loop, with additional short countdown announcements. Each loop must be completed within an hour and no personal aid is allowed on the course. There will be a single aid station at the start/finish offering water, hydration drinks, food, and porta potties. Participants may bring and use their own supplies at the start/finish and may camp at that location between loops.
Timing and live results will be provided by Brunning Endurance Timing, including a live video feed. The event is in the process of obtaining Bronze status for 2027. Registration tiers vary by date. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
