Coalfields Backyard Ultra - May 28, 2027
Coalfields Backyard Ultra is a Last Runner Standing backyard ultra held in Williamson, WV, organized by Tug Valley Road Runners and scheduled for Memorial Day weekend on May 28, 2027. The event is a Lazarus Lake-sanctioned Backyard Ultra.
The course is a measured out-and-back loop of 4.1667 miles (2.08 miles out and 2.08 miles back) located at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. The route follows an asphalt flood wall river path, passes Williamson PK-8 school on a gravel section, goes through a neighborhood, and passes a recreation area before the 2.08 mile turnaround. The course is described as very flat, will be marked with cones and directional arrows, and includes one section that may be redirected if heavily saturated.
The format uses hourly starts; each loop must be completed within an hour to be counted. The event will use a warning system and bell for each loop. There is a single aid station at the start/finish offering water, hydration, food, and porta potties. No personal aid is allowed on the course; participants may keep their own supplies and set up camp at the start/finish area. Participants can arrive with crew and provisions for multi-day effort.
Timing and results will be managed by Brunning Endurance Timing with live results and a live video feed. The event is in the process of seeking Bronze status for 2027. Registration pricing tiers range from $130 to $180 depending on registration date. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
