Coalfields Backyard Ultra
Coalfields Backyard Ultra is a Last Runner Standing running event held on May 28, 2027 in Williamson, West Virginia. The race is organized by Tug Valley Road Runners and is part of the Backyard Ultra series.
The format requires runners to complete a measured out-and-back loop of 4.1667 miles (each direction 2.08 miles) for a total loop length of 4.1667 miles / 6.7056 km. Each loop begins precisely one hour after the previous loop; competitors must complete the loop within the hour to continue. A warning system is used before each start including announcements at three, two, and one minute prior, plus a 30 second notice and a 10 second countdown.
The course takes place at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College and follows an asphalt path along the West Williamson flood wall, passes a school and local neighborhood, and reaches a turnaround near a recreation area. The route is described as very flat and will be marked with cones, arrows, and other markers. One section may be rerouted if the path becomes saturated by rain.
There is a single aid station at the start/finish area providing water, sports drink, food, and porta potties. Personal aid and supplies are allowed at the start/finish but not on the course. Participants may camp or set up a crew area near the start/finish. Timing, live results, and live video feed are planned. Event registration follows published tiered pricing.
