About the race
Chase the Moon is an overnight trail endurance event held in the Highlands Ranch Backcountry area near Mountain Vista High School, Colorado. The event runs on a rolling trail loop that is largely dirt and minimally technical, and it is organized as a fixed-time endurance format with both solo and team options.
Participants can enter these formats:
- 12 hour solo, 6 hour solo, 3 hour solo, 50K
- 3 person relay (12 hour), 5 person relay (12 hour)
The primary loop is 10.3 miles with approximately 870 feet of elevation gain per lap; a shorter relay loop of 5.3 miles with about 420 feet gain is used for 5-person teams. Two aid stations support the course (Outlaw at mile 4.3 and the Start/Finish); aid stations are stocked with hydration (water, Tailwind, soda) and food (sweet and salty snacks, fruit, PB&J), plus basic supplies such as Kleenex, bug repellant, and Vaseline.
Safety and logistics notes include a requirement to carry a headlamp or handheld light while on course, crew support limited to the Start/Finish area, and no pacers allowed. Drop bag and crew areas are provided at Start/Finish. Medical staff are based at Start/Finish and Outlaw aid will carry basic first aid. Runners are asked to respect wildlife and follow on-course safety guidance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
