Castle to Castle Ultra - Carrickfergus, Saturday 20 March 2027
This event offers two route choices between Carrickfergus Castle and Belfast Castle. Runners follow a course that crosses three named hills and uses a mix of surfaces.
- 52.4 mile Ultra Marathon out-and-back Carrickfergus Castle to Belfast Castle
- Marathon from Belfast Castle to Carrickfergus Castle
The Ultra starts at Carrickfergus Castle, runs to Belfast Castle and returns to finish at Carrickfergus Castle. The Marathon runs from Belfast Castle to the finish beside Carrickfergus Castle. Both routes climb and descend Knockagh, Carnmoney hill and Cavehill; the Ultra covers those hills twice. The course includes trail, footpaths, road and forest paths and offers views across Belfast Lough.
Participants will be fully tracked and use a GPS route file to navigate; the organiser will supply GPX details closer to the event. There will be water refill stops and aid stations along the route and an option for a drop bag at the Ultra turnaround. There will be no extra signage or marshals on the course.
The event promotes self-sufficiency; mandatory kit includes a charged mobile phone, waterproof jacket, emergency foil blanket and a bag or pack to carry these items. Runners must carry refillable bottles as no bottled water or cups are supplied. Cut off times are 14 hours for the Ultra and 7 hours for the Marathon. Registration takes place in Carrickfergus on the morning of the events and competitors will be bused to the marathon start.
