Cappy's Backyard Ultra
Cappy's Backyard Ultra is a backyard-ultra event held at Cathedral Gorge State Park, Panaca, Lincoln County, Nevada. Runners repeat a loop of 4.1667 miles each hour; each loop must be completed within the hour to continue. The event follows the standard backyard-ultra format: when only one runner completes a final lap more than any other, that runner is declared the winner. Participants may have a small crew of up to two people stationed in the start area. Runners must be in the starting corral before each hour begins; organizers provide minute warnings before each loop. No pacers, no artificial aids such as trekking poles, and no on-course aid are allowed. The course will be well marked.
The race uses two course configurations. The day loop is a single loop that is about 25% road and 75% single-track or hiking trail, with roughly 292 ft total climbing and a gradual uphill section between about miles 1.5 and 2.5. The night course is an out-and-back that is about 75% road and 25% dirt road or trail, with approximately 117 ft of elevation gain. The start/finish area includes an aid station with water, sports drink, basic food items, and some hot beverages; no aid stations are provided along the loop. Registration includes one night of dry camping and day-use parking for one vehicle. Entry fee is listed as $95 and registration runs from April 9, 2026 through March 24, 2027. There are no refunds and there is no race-day registration. Amenities at the group use area include restrooms, showers, pavilions, and power for charging devices. Runners who DNF receive a DNF medal; all registered runners receive a race shirt. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
