Cane Field Classic

The 13th annual Cane Field Classic takes place at Port Allen Middle School Football Field in Port Allen, Louisiana. The event includes a set of running races staged on headlands and dirt field roads surrounded by mature sugarcane, working agricultural land, and canals; the Louisiana State Capitol can be seen from parts of the course.

Race offerings:

  • 1 Mile Sugar Mile through the cane fields.
  • 4 Miles Cane Field 4 Miler through sugarcane headlands.
  • 7 Miles Machete 7 combining the 1 Mile, 4 Mile, and the Rows of Hell 2 Mile.

The Rows of Hell is open only to Machete 7 participants and runs through the middle of an uncut sugarcane field on rough, uneven terrain that can range from hard-packed to extremely muddy. Organizers note natural hazards such as ruts, tire tracks, holes, mud, and overgrown cane; sugarcane leaves can scratch exposed skin. Organizers recommend older shoes and consider lightweight long sleeves or running pants for the Rows of Hell.

Finishers of the Machete 7 receive a machete-style finisher award; finisher awards are issued only to participants who start and finish the applicable race. Awards are presented by gender: top three male and female for individual races, top 10 male and female for the Machete 7. Packet pickup is available the Friday prior at The Block Fit in Baton Rouge and on race day at the race site. Registration is final; the event policy states no refunds, deferrals, or bib transfers.
