Bruce's Crown and Heart of Granite : 3 April 2027
Bruce's Crown is a long mountain circuit in the Galloway hills that visits the southern peaks, Rhinnes of Kells, Range of the Awful Hand and Bruce's Stone. The "perfect" route is measured at 46 miles with about 4600 m of ascent. Opentracking will record visits to the checkpoints and there are multiple manned checkpoints on route providing hot food and drink and Mountain Rescue Team safety points on the hills. The event is licensed and run under Scottish Hills Runners with GMRT insurance, and all profits go to Galloway Mountain Rescue Team.
A second event on the same day, the Heart of Granite, is a 20 mile circular route with about 1850 m of ascent for solo runners.
Entry is processed via SIEntries. The entry fee for Bruce's Crown is £75 per person; entries may be solo or teams of two, three or four. Entry includes a Harbours Gin miniature, a commemorative mug and a vegetable chilli at the finish. Entrants are placed on a pre-selection list and previous mountain experience is checked; as a minimum a solo entrant or two members of a team must demonstrate one of the listed mountain experiences (for example a mountain marathon, two long fell race completions, or an equivalent long mountain round). Camping is available at Caldons campsite for Friday and Saturday night with modest fees. The organisers publish maps, escape routes and low-level alternatives and use cutoffs at specific checkpoints plus an overall Sunday morning cutoff.
