About the race
Blacks Grove Backyard Ultra is a backyard ultra event held at Blacks Grove Park in Wadena, Minnesota. The event offers two formats: a Last Runner Standing backyard ultra and a one-loop fun run. The official loop is 4.167 miles on technical singletrack through Minnesota woods with roots, rocks, and rolling hills.
The backyard ultra uses an hourly loop format. Runners must complete the loop within the hour to continue. The event prohibits pacing and on-course outside assistance. Crew and support are allowed only in the start/finish yard. Participant caps are 60 runners for the backyard division and 60 for the one-loop fun run; a waitlist is available if fields are full.
A set of event-specific rules applies. Direction on the loop reverses every five loops. A silence period is enforced overnight from 10 PM to 5 AM with reduced noise at the aid station. Each runner selects one comfort item at check-in for the whole event (for example a chair or a blanket, a hot drink or hot food, a beanie or hand warmers). Eliminated runners receive a personalized DNF chip.
Mandatory gear includes a phone, a headlamp after dark, reflective or visibility gear, hydration, weather-appropriate layers, and personal nutrition. Camping is available in designated primitive areas with no electrical hookups. The last runner standing receives a personalized belt buckle and a cash prize; other participants receive engraved DNF chips or swag and sponsor items. A waiver must be acknowledged during registration and signed again at packet pickup. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
