Blacks Grove Backyard Ultra Presented by Agony of DeFeet Wadena Run Club
The event is a backyard ultra held at Blacks Grove Park in Wadena, Minnesota on May 29, 2027. The format uses a 4.167-mile loop that is repeated hourly for the Last Runner Standing division. A separate One Loop Fun Run allows participants to complete a single 4.167-mile circuit and remain to support the backyard runners.
Field sizes are limited to 60 runners for each division with a waitlist if entries fill. Registration closes on May 16. Packet pickup and check-in take place the morning of the event and require a signed waiver; registrants must acknowledge the waiver during online registration and sign again in person.
The course is described as technical singletrack through Minnesota woods with roots, rocks, and rolling hills. The event enforces specific backyard ultra rules: each loop must be started on time and finished within the hour, no on-course pacing or outside help, and crew support limited to the yard at the start/finish area. Additional signature rules include periodic reversal of loop direction, a nighttime quiet period, a one comfort item policy chosen at check-in, and a gong procedure for eliminations.
Mandatory gear includes a phone, headlamp after dark, reflective gear, hydration, weather-appropriate layers, and personal nutrition. Designated primitive camping and restricted parking areas are provided. Prizes include a belt buckle and cash for the Last Runner Standing winner and swag for all participants.
