About the race
The Black Lung Ultramarathon is a fourth annual ultramarathon held in Nordegg, AB, presented as a clover style course with three legs that start and finish at the same location near Nordegg Community Hall.
Available race categories include:
- 62 km Solo
- 2 Person Relay Team
- 3 Person Relay Team
- Minor Miners
The course begins with Leg 1 "Coliseum Mountain," a technical ascent and descent that includes a short ladder, a steep rocky descent and a total elevation gain of 1078 m. Leg 2 "for the 29 in the Mine" departs from town, ascends Nordegg Mountain, descends and returns via a historic rail trail. Leg 3 "Collieries Closer" follows multi-use trails east of town, passes through Nordegg’s historic collieries, and finishes with a final descent into town.
The clover layout allows teams and supporting crews to remain at the start/finish area while runners complete each leg. On-site amenities noted for event day include food trucks and a beer garden. A Refund Guarantee from SPOT is offered as an optional purchase at registration to request a refund of the entry fee for covered personal reasons; this coverage does not apply to event cancellation or postponement. Registration opens Mon. Nov 2, 2026 at 11:00 AM MT. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
