The event offers multiple distances and runs mainly on four wheel drive dirt roads with short sections of single-track and pavement. Much of the 50 mile and 100K courses are above 7,000 feet in elevation, and the terrain is exposed, often dry, sometimes rocky, and subject to widely varying mountain weather.

Aid stations are placed roughly every 3 to 7 miles and include medical kits, foot care supplies, anti-chafe products, and sunscreen. Pain relief medications are not provided. Runners are tracked by a local Ham Radio club. Drop bags may be left near the start and are returned to Millpond after aid stations close; locations and rules are specified for each race. Crew access is limited to a few roadside aid stations, and pacers are allowed for 100K from a designated highway aid station.
Prizes are awarded to overall first place finishers by gender including non-binary; there are no age group awards. All finishers receive a custom ceramic medallion. The event operates as a benefit for local youth outdoor programming and Inyo County Search and Rescue and is run with required land use permits. Registration is non-transferable and a refund schedule applies prior to the event. Drop-downs and in-race distance changes are permitted with notification to aid stations.
