BIRR Hilo to Volcano 50K Run/Walk/Relay
The event is a point-to-point 50K (about 31 miles) from Hilo to the Cooper Center in Volcano on January 9, 2027. The course gains approximately 4,000 feet of elevation and uses shoulders on Hwy 11. The start location is the underground parking lot of the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel on Banyan Drive and the finish is at the Cooper Center in Volcano.
The event offers solo and team relay formats. Relay teams change runners every 2 miles at the even mile markers. Certain relay prizes apply only to teams with no more than three runners, while family and student relay categories have no team size limit. There are no aid stations along the course; runners are encouraged to bring their own water and nourishment. A light lunch, snacks, drinks and medals are provided at the finish.
Prizes are awarded for solo and relay divisions. Solo prizes include top three female and male overall plus top two female and male in each 10 year age group. Relay prizes include top teams by gender and mixed divisions for up to 40 years and a Masters division for teams where all members are over 40 years. Family and student relay prizes are awarded to the top two teams in each category. Registration opens September 15, 2026 and closes January 1, 2027. Registration fees vary by category. Packet pickup is at the Hilo Hawaiian on January 8 between 3:00 and 5:30 pm and race morning between 5:30 and 5:50 am. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
