Big Timber XC Challenge at Camp Big Timber, Elgin, IL
The Big Timber XC Challenge takes place on Sunday, November 8, 2026 at Camp Big Timber in Elgin. The event offers trail running over mowed grass paths, gravel driveways, dirt and short single-track sections through a wooded property that includes a creek crossing.
Distances
- 3 miles one loop of the perimeter trail
- 5 miles two loops of the perimeter trail
- 1/4 mile Kids Fun Run for ages 10 and younger
The race route starts and finishes at the Main Lodge driveway. Runners follow gravel roads onto a mowed grass pathway up a small hill, complete one or two perimeter loops, then return to the gravel drive to the finish. Expect uneven ground, exposed roots, rocks, low-hanging branches, wet or marshy areas, and possible snow or ice. The creek crossing is about 15 feet wide and conditions can range from ankle deep to knee deep depending on recent weather.
All registered participants receive a pancake breakfast. Entry swag options for the 3- and 5-mile events include a choice of flannel shirt or pants if registered by October 14; later registrants receive a printed long-sleeve tech shirt with no guaranteed size. Kids Fun Run entries include a short sleeve t-shirt and breakfast.
Awards are given to overall and age-group finishers, and a team competition scores teams of three to five runners by cumulative time for the 5-mile race. Proceeds benefit the Boy Scouts of America Three Fires Council and the Elgin Sharks. Parking at Camp Big Timber is limited. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
