Bauers Megabackyard Funrun, Waterville
Bauers Megabackyard Funrun is an endurance event held in Waterville on the first Saturday in January each year. Competitors repeat the official Waterville Trailrunning Festival loop of 43 km; each completed circuit must be finished within eight hours to count. Loops start at fixed eight hour intervals and continue as long as any runner can complete additional full loops.
The event is limited to 33 participants chosen from applicants; places are allocated after a specified number of applications and must be confirmed with payment within seven days. Entry costs €100 and participants receive €5 back for every loop they complete. Places are non transferrable, non refundable and cannot be deferred.
Base camp is used for camping and crew support only; only tents are permitted for participants. Each runner must have a minimum of one support crew and a maximum of two present at base camp. Vehicles may be parked in the designated car park but participants cannot access vehicles during loops. One communal camp fire is provided; individual camp fires are not permitted.
Required kit includes a tent, tracker provided by the organisers, a sealed mobile phone for emergency use only, waterproof jacket and trousers, thermal layers, hat and gloves, map and compass, whistle, survival shelter or bivvy, survival blanket, a basic first aid kit and a means to carry at least 500 ml of water. GPS navigation is permitted. During a loop no external support or aid from non participants is allowed and taking items from others while on course results in disqualification.
The winner is defined as the last person to complete a full loop; all other competitors are recorded as non finishers. Recent editions show winning totals of three to five completed loops, while many entrants finish fewer loops or record a DNF. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
